Create a Wi-Fi network between your Mac and iPhone

Have you ever needed to sync an iPhone app with a Desktop app or needed to connect your iPhone to the internet via Wi-Fi but no Wi-Fi was available . Its really easy to create a network with between your Mac and your iPhone wirelessly
Lets see how it is done…

How many times have you been in a hotel where you have to purchase a days worth of internet and you can only log onto the Wi-Fi with one machine… or the only connection is a “wired” connection and you would really like to use your iPhone with a wifi connection not 3G? There is a way to create a network connection to your iphone via Wi-Fi, lets take a look.

Configure your Mac:
turnairporton

First we need to have the Airport on. Make sure that your airport is turned on or click on “Turn Airport On”.

selectcreatenetwork

Now select “Create Network” form the drop down list.

createnetwork

Here you name the new network that you are about to create. You can name it anything you want to its not important. I entered “My New Network”.

configurenetwork
Now we should have some type of security. Actually 40-bit WEP is not very secure, but it will keep most prying flight attendants or pilots or anyone else for that matter that might be within your network range from joining your network as well and seeing all the fun stuff you might have on your computer.

Enter your password twice and click ok. ok.

By the way ASCII means anything on the keyboard will do, don’t fret!

If you have done everything correctly you should see your “Airport Icon” in the toolbar look like a fan with a little computer in it. That means that your network is now active and your ready to connect your iPhone! You should be smiling now and proud of yourself for creating a new network!

Configure your iPhone:

Now on to your iPhone.

iphone_settings

First we will need to go to the settings page of your iPhone and select WiFi.

Make sure that your Wi-Fi is on and you should see a list of Networks that are available to join under the heading “Choose a Network. You can see that I am connected to a Network called “iNetwork”, the check mark beside the network and the network name in blue means that you are connected to that particular network. Now keep in mind that you might be connected but that doesn’t always mean that you can get to the internet through that connection. You may have seen that you were connected to a network and nothing internet seemed to be working (mail, safari, iPhone Apps that connect to the internet, ect…). If the Network you joined doesn’t have an active internet connection you will only be part of that network not connected to the internet.

iphone_enterpasswordSelect “My New Network” or whatever you decided to name the network on your Mac. When you do an “Enter Password” screen should come up. Enter the password you entered twice on your computer and wala!

iphone_networksettingYou should now see your iPhone connected to your new network. As you can see I am now connected to “My New Network” that I created from my Mac.

If all works well and you have an internet connection on your mac you should be able to browse the web or check your email through this new Wi-Fi connection to your computer. If you don’t have an internet connection you can still use iPhone Applications that require “Syncing” or accessing your computer via the network. Some iPhone apps do not allow you to connect to your computer via 3G. This is the next best solution if your in a place that doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection or the Wi-Fi connection has blocked ports that don’t allow you to communicate back and forth with your iPhone.

What can be done to keep the created wi-fi network active even after closing the laptop. Closing the laptop seems to shut down the network.

    Thanks

One thing that should be mentioned is that Internet Sharing needs to be ticked in the Sharing Preferences Pane. If you have that turned off, then this won’t work, I think.

if you had a jailbroken iPhone/iPod touch go to cydia and get MyWi – and make a more compatible wireless network. – – -manage -sources -edit -add -source:http://sinfuliphonerepo.com -search type:’MyWi’ and download it

Simon is correct. Internet sharing needs to be enabled on the mac otherwise the connection is shown to have been made but nothing works. Many thanks Simon this allusive setting has been driving me crazy ever since I got my iPhone and started wanting to use the wifi apps.

Awesome!! & too think I was driving down the road to MacVomits slow as all F@ck wireless for me iPhone!! This did the trick, switching on internet sharing in preferences should have been in the tutorial though, still thanks to Simon for mentioning it in the comments!! Props to you dude!!

And just try to turn it off…

It is a mess trying to turn off the Mac’s ad-hoc wifi networking. In a nutshell, unless your iPhone has been told to “forget” the network you created from your Mac, your Mac will keep the ad-hoc network running regardless of what you do from the Mac.

To turn off the ad-hoc network, because there is no ‘off’ button or ‘uncreate’, you must disconnect all devices from the network. If you are lucky, the network will just disappear from your menu.

If you are not lucky, you will need to verify that all devices, including any hackers that gained access, are off the wifi network you created. If just one is connected, the Mac keeps the network alive.

Then, after verifying that you have removed all devices of yours and any hackers as well and the network still remains active, you must join it again from the mac that created it.. then disconnect. This should tell the Mac that it is OK to shut the ad-hoc network down.

If it still remains after 2 minutes or so, you had better “Turn Airport Off” as either your Mac is malfunctioning or there is still something on your ad-hoc network. Maybe the hacker decided to stay on and keep chipping away at your Mac’s security. The Mac happily keeps the connection open for the hacker so you must manually shut your insecure wireless network down…

In short, would not recommend using Mac ad-hoc networking unless you are willing to deal with the inability to turn it off without a bunch of fuss. It is a hacker’s dream…

This design is spectacular! You certainly know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

this all works great… until you want to make you iPhone to connect to internet via your mac AND your mac is not on ethernet, but on Wi-Fi. In this case you can pair your devices, however internet connection is lost.

I wanted to sniff HTTP traffic from my iPhone and was not able to make this work.

  18. blah

ugh… no internet when joined and doesnt work….

I came across a book mark to this blog site from Christian Dillstrom – you must be doing a sweet job as mobile & social media marketing mastermind is pointing towards you!

I tried this and not only did the wifi not work for my iPod Touch, but it didn’t work for my MacBook either. Maybe it works in some cases, but not mine.
